Parking is the one rule almost guaranteed to cost you money, and the one where “I'll just figure it out when I get there” is most likely to backfire. It's also, we'll admit, the rule where the internet — including us — is most likely to be guessing.
The figures below are computed live from the 190 parking policies Packaroni currently tracks, each one read off the venue's own published rule where one exists. They update as the underlying data does.
Free parking is the exception, not the rule
181 of the 190 venues we track (95%) have a published parking fee. Whatever venue you're headed to, the safe assumption is that parking costs something — the surprise, when there is one, tends to run the other direction: a fee you weren't expecting, not a free lot you didn't know about.
Confirmed general parking is genuinely free at a small number of venues we track, including Alligator Adventure, S.B. Ballard Stadium, and Williams Stadium. Don't generalize from these — free general parking is the exception precisely because it's rare enough to be worth naming individually.
“Free” here means the venue's own summary describes general parking itself as free — not a single free ADA lot or a free shuttle alongside otherwise-paid parking, which show up much more often and don't count.
Who charges, and how the pricing is structured
Paid parking is close to universal across every venue type we track, but how it's priced varies a lot more than whether it's priced at all:

College football is where itemized RV and bus pricing shows up most — 18 of 86 programs we track break it out as its own line, more than any other group, which tracks with how central RV tailgating culture is to college gamedays. NFL venues are the opposite: only 2 of 30 publish a separate RV/bus rate, not because oversized vehicles aren't around, but because most NFL lots simply don't itemize for them the way college programs do.
The advance-vs-gate-day gap
At ticketed sports venues, showing up without a plan can genuinely cost you more: 6 of 19 NBA/NHL arenas, 7 of 29 MLB ballparks, and 7 of 30 NFL stadiums we track charge a different rate for advance purchase versus paying at the gate — and some lots go advance-only entirely once they're close to full. Theme parks are the clean exception: none of the 23 we track price parking this way. It's a flat daily rate whether you buy ahead or pay at the booth, which is one less thing to plan around if a theme park is where you're headed.
The practical takeaway: for a game or concert, buying parking ahead of time is frequently the cheaper option and sometimes the only guaranteed one. For a theme park, it mostly just saves you a line.
A note on pricing accuracy
This is worth being honest about: roughly 65% of the parking fee figures we track are explicitly flagged in our own data as sourced from a secondary aggregator rather than the venue's own published rate — because a lot of venues, especially in college football, simply don't publish an official parking price at all, and third-party resale/booking sites are the only place a number exists.
We'd rather tell you that plainly than present a guessed number with false confidence. Where our data marks a price as unconfirmed, treat it as a ballpark, not a quote — and where it matters, the venue's own site (linked from every venue page we track) is the source to check directly before you travel.
